Hoping to do some Coyote hunting for the first time and need your advice.
I have a 12gauge 3.5 shotgun, and a Ruger 10/22 rimfire ... which would u pick, and what shot size if you pick the shot gun ?

Go with the shotgun and #4 buck and keep your setups for relatively close shooting.
Your .22 can do the job if necessary but a little light IMO. Coyotes are tough critters.

ok #4 it is, thank you both.
I was thinking of going with 00 buck, but I guess not necessary.
any recommendations on choke to use ? and set up wise I guess I can get as far as 50 yards or so ?
If you can get out to pattern your shotgun first, try your modified and full chokes and see what works. If you can't get out to pattern, I'd probably use the modified and keep it to 40.
Best of luck. Offering to hunt coyotes before asking permission to hunt anything else is a good way to open up doors and new properties.

Unfortunately the shooting range only allows 00 buck shots as the smallest shotgun size. ill still experiment with those and different chokes.
what is your view on the long range extended chokes ? do they actually extend my range ? worth it? I have a modified extended choke which I use for duck hunting.
First you should read your range rules again. 00 buck is likely the largest allowed. If not then no one could pattern their turkey or bird shells and chokes.
As for coyote/turkey chokes. I have two ported chokes and love them. $$$ but worth it if they pattern well. I use them for buffered 00 and #4 buckshot, and #4,5,6 birdshot to reach squirrels at the top of trees..
I reload my own 12 gauge 3" shot shells for coyote. It consists of 9 (I cast) X "0" gauge (.32cal), interspersed with # 4 lead shot, they are pushing 1425 fps and are effective out to 40 yrds.
In bush I use "my buckshot" in open field I use .223. A .22 will take down a cow with right conditions, and right shot placement, I dont think I would try over 40 yards with .22.
