New in Town

Good Day All!

My gal and I have just recently retired to Northern Ontario. It is necessary to help out some family during this whole Co-Vid thing and has brought us here. We have settled on a rural homestead between Thessalon and Sowerby. When we arrived in August (After quarantining for 14 days) we had some time to do some scouting and a bit of shore fishing. We were in the areas around Bright Lake, Cranberry Lake, and McCraights pond. We have found many small lakes but had no luck except a big smallmouth Bass from Bright Lake.
I am looking for friendly information of the upcoming ice fishing season. Can anyone recommend where we can get some fish? We have a portable Ice shelter, and all the gear. No snow machine so we are looking for locations we can pull our gear and shelter to by hand sled. Any info will be great.

My best advice would be to seek out your local Game Warden and ask this same question. Having worked in the past for MNRF I was always happy to provide advice to folks when they asked. The guy you want to talk to is: Bryon Cosgrove | Conservation Officer, Terrace Bay | 807-825-3402 | [email protected]. All government numbers are posted online at Info-Go. Try sending him an email. You may be surprised at just how much good fishing info you can get if you just ask!

Not Sure if Byron can provide the best info for the Thessalon Area. Terrace Bay is 565 Kilometers away.

Good point - those guys are spread out thinner than the last of gramma's freezer jam on a big peice of toast. Here's the link to MNRF enforcement offices. http://www.infogo.gov.on.ca/infogo/#orgProfile/4598/en . Pick the region you want from the list and that might also help

This will show the lakes that are stocked with Trout. It also has fish species listed in each lake.

Welcome. There are numerous lakes in your area that are accessible on foot. North on hwy 129 there is Wakomata L., cummings L., and several others all close to the highway. Bright L has always produced decent walleye. A little to the west of you, has Ottertail, Desbarats, Gordon, Rock lakes, just to name a few. Good Day Sir,
We are just waiting for some of gear to be shipped to us from Calgary. When we traveled in August we only brought what we needed (And fit in the van and camper trailer). We did a scouting mission out to the boat launch on Bright Lake. There was a couple of brave (?) souls out about 400 to 500 hundred yards with a couple of pop up shelters. You could see the open water just past where they were. That is still a little too sketchy for me. Thanks for the local info. I will be in touch as soon as our gear, (Pop up shelter, rods, auger, etc.) arrive. Hopefully the lakes will have frozen up some more.

Yes, it's been mild here and forecast is still not great for ice making. If we get some colder temps without the snow, it should be good soon?
