Crazy silly question

Hello, all hope everyone had a great Christmas and new year break, and all family and friends are well and safe.

No I know there are rifle restrictions in certain areas (example east ontario is shotgun only for big game) I could have sworn i saw that in the hunting regulation book, I printed it online earlier this year.

But I can't find any info on where all that info went, big reason I'm asking is we are looking at buying 52 acres and want to make sure its not in a shotgun only area before we go into more details about purchasing.

I'm sure once I find out I'm gonna feel like an idiot but I know I habe seen that info before somewhere and just can't find it lol

I am not 100% sure but I think these areas where the .270 restrictions apply are also shotgun deer hunt areas only.... Like I said, not 100% sure...

A person hunting small game may not carry or use a rifle of greater calibre than a .275-calibre rifle, except a muzzle-loading gun, in the geographic areas of Brant, Chatham-Kent, Durham, Elgin, Essex, Haldimand, Halton, Hamilton, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex, Niagara, Norfolk, Northumberland, Oxford, Peel, Perth, Toronto, Waterloo, Wellington or York.

Regarding the use of shotguns v.s. rifles, in the deer hunting section, the table with the season dates lists the firearms that are allowed to be used for the various WMUs. For example, for WMU 65, it says something like "shotguns and muzzleloaders only".

Edit: so in the link above, page 38, indicates the WMUs with a star and a footnote saying rifles are not allowed. I seem to remember it being different before, so they may have modified how they indicate this.

X2 -find the WMU your property is to be-find open deer sasons for that WMU,you will find the answer.It will be specified.

If you find a property that interest you, it might be wise to check with the municipality that it is in. In some case a noise by-law can kick in, as well as a shotgun only restriction

Do not limit yourself. The Savage 220 shotgun shoots like a rifle and I have been using one in WMU65 for quite a few years now.

If you pass on that land send me a PM. I could be interested...lol

It's very important to understand that the "shotguns only-no dogs" designation applies to the two week gun hunt for Deer,only,not big game in general. Black Bears,where there's an open season,may still be hunted with rifles greater than .275 and with larger shot sizes in shotguns in those WMU's that have the small game caliber restrictions unless they're banned specifically by municipal bylaws. Townships with discharge bylaws that designate shotguns only is exceedingly rare if there's any left at all. Most have been rescinded and re-written to coincide with provincial legislation in the FWCA.

Before you buy make sure to call the municipality and ask if they have any discharge rules, including caliber and or type. There are some places that restrict you to certain calibers unless at a registered range and some limit the type for hunting purposes, I have been told that some of the islands of the St Lawrence are like that but have not hunted them so did not verify.
