American Leopard Hounds in Ontario???

Anyone here know of any breeders or hunters who have any in the area? By area I mean pretty much all of Ontario because as it stands now I'm seriously contemplating going down to Missouri once all this covid crap comes to an end. Seems like that'll be my easiest option in the long run as choices don't seem to be too plentiful up here.

Long story short our dog passed a couple days before christmas. 13 year old GSD/Rottweiler so it was expected, sucks none the less though. So now I'm on the hunt for a dog, not in any hurry though. I've been trying to find something that would made a good house dog but that I could also try to turn into a decent coon dog. From what I gather a good American Leopard Hound would fit the bill. Close hunters, smart, not too bull headed so they'll still obey commands while hunting and good with kids etc.

Another aspect of my dilemma is I NEED a pup. I don't want a started dog, I want a pup that I'll build a relationship with right from the start. Makes it much easier with training/obeying commands while their nose is telling them not to.

Also ... I'm not looking for a Catahoula. A Catahoula Leopard dog isn't the same as an American Leopard Hound. It's a confusing mess I tell ya!

I don't pretend to be a houndsman, and have never heard of this breed. Thanks for posting I did some reading.

Can't help you in your search for the leopard but know of a litter of Blueticks. The stud is absolutely hunt crazy (primarily bear), good looking, and is allowed to sleep in his son's room on down days. They were just born and may all be spoken for already however.

Sorry to hear about your loss. We lost our 14 yo Toller last Nov and won't be replacing her.
There are plenty of breeds that could satisfy your requirements. I think you do yourself a disservice by focusing only on one breed IMO. Specially since 99% of the time they are a family pet.

I understand what you're saying. We're not solely focusing on this breed though. Some of my other considerations would be easier to get my hands on, others much harder bordering on impossible. The one that checks most of the boxes is a true American Leopard Hound. A Catahoula could fit the bill and they're much easier to get out here but they tend to run more which is no good for me since I live in town at the moment. I wouldn't mind one if I was strictly looking for a pet/family member and had no intention of hunting with it. But seeing as I want to hunt as well, having to break a dog of his desire to chase game wouldn't do me any good. I also can't have a hard headed dog that won't recall and decide he's going wherever his nose takes him every time we go outside. This need for a half working hound half house dog balance is where my options start bottlenecking.

Any breed of dog can be trained to do any job. Some breeds are just easier to train to do specific jobs than others. If you found a chihuahua with the right personality you could train it to chase and tree coons if you really wanted to. Problem is finding the one that'll do it. That's where breed specific traits come in.
