His first coyote is in the books :)
Hard work and determination pays off for us....
I have been trying to get my neighbours boy a coyote for a while now. We had some close encounters but just couldn't get it done until this afternoon....
To give you some background...... This morning I went out for coyotes on my own, did 2 sets, did not see anything but on my way home I happen to drive by this particular farm at 9am and from the road spot a few coyotes in the cut corn. From the road watching them with my binos I see them doing the deed (mating season is in full swing).....What luck, do not see that everyday :)
I have been to this farm a few times with the boy as he knows the owner but the hunters code keeps me from entering without him....
I watch them for about 10 minutes before leaving. I get home, call the boy, leave a message and wait for him to call me back... Just after noon he calls, I let him know what I have seen and if he is interested we can try an afternoon hunt. He is super excited. I pick him up at 1:30... We get to the farm, setup close to the bush as the wind was strong and call for about 15 minutes with no luck..... With the strong winds, we decided to leave and come back another day with nicer conditions..At least we tried it......
We pack up, leave the farm, drive around the concession and see these two coyotes out in the cut corn (same area I seen them this morning)... We watch them for a while and make a plan of attack....
We drive back to the farm lane way, make our way to a treeline and watch them from about 400 yds out... I try calling but they are not coming, after a while they get further away... With no way to get closer without being spotted we leave..... Once again on our way home we drive around the concession and spot them again in that cut corn. We sit watching them again for about 5 minutes before they start moving across the field. So once again drive back to the farm, park at the barn, make our way and spot them about 400 yds out but this time we have some trees and small sand hills that will block their view....
We cut across the cut corn as fast as we can keeping the hill and small trees between us and the coyote.... As we get to the top of the small hill we see both coyotes about 200 yds out and again they are doing the deed....
We both get prone on top of the hill and on the count of 3 we are to take the shot..... In the excitement the boy shoots hitting his coyote, mine starts to run and I miss the shot :(....
Lots of back and forth, waiting, watching and playing the wind helped us get close enough to complete the task. We started hunting/calling them a 2:15 pm and put her down at 4:30pm....Lots of work, but the boy is super happy and that is what is important :)
We even skinned her out on site but forgot to take a picture of that....
