Anyone using any of the Drill auger varients?

Covid wiped out hitting Simcoe for perch in the spring. And between restrictions and ice to start the season, my usual book a hut twice a season very much in doubt. Then to, cabin fever and need to scratch itches has had me looking at picking up various things to get out a few times.

Am having a tough time deciding which way to go for an auger. And I know after drilling holes through 10-12inch's manually. I ain't as young as I used to be. My arms are still sore after last weekend.

I am quite taken with the idea of shaving pounds out of the sled, so the leader there is the Pistol Drill. But they all seem better options than gas.

Problem number 2 is most places are sold out of everything unless I go for a loooooong drive, when I could be fishing. I could cheap out for CTs Woods version but am leery. Last option is abuse my arms for the rest of this season which isn't a lot. Then pick up one of the three, next year when hopefully retailers have stock again.

Curious how many are using any of them, and which ones

I have the clam plate powered by the 18v Milwaukee fuel 5 amp. Can drill through 40 ft of ice per battery I rarely ever need the second battery. That's with a 6 inch my buddy picked up 8 inch fin bore and it cuts like butter. That will be my next upgrade .

The blades I haven't changed in 4 years ,what was once a year thing and with the 8 inch I was changing the blades twice a year to for ease of cutting by hand lol.


Ps hut operations are still going good but have to be residents from the same house hold if you go . If you want to go with a friend you need 2 huts so you would have to pay the minimum for both huts if that's how they charge.

This is my setup I keep it simple this is all I ever bring. 3 main items and the sled , bag , auger and finder . Keep it simple I move to much for a hut no point in bringing them I have had 4 huts and never use them . Picked up a sweet 8 man Pop up this summer and have yet to use it lol. Blame covid it was for my kid and I with the tournament's and for when we have a my dad and brother out so I'm sure it will get used next year maybe.

I have the clam drill adapter plate with a 20v Dewalt, with 4 ah batteries. It lasts all day....

If you already have a manual auger and a decent cordless drill, you only need an adapter to connect the drill to the auger, once you remove the auger handle. I made my own adapter, but you can buy them at CTC. I use a 20v 1/2" DeWalt drill that has no issue stalling out when drilling using the lowest speed setting. Just need to keep the battery from getting too cold.

I have a manual but it’s older, a one piece . So if I go the clam route. It’s plate + auger.

Kind of desperate to get out, break the cabin fever. So “time” is a factor.

I was able to get my hands on a pistol bit. These things are feather light. I was shocked at how light when I first held it. Hopefully try it out this weekend somewhere for crappie or perch.

I may still change to the clam adapter. They are sold out everywhere and used ones are too far. Time is of the essence with a short window/season this year.

I think I also like the stability and flexibility of being able to change the auger. Have a 6 and 8 plus handles. Even with the extra 8-9 pounds

20v 4ah dewalt with a clam plate and finbore shaft good for about 20 or 24 holes in 14 inches of ice last weekend.nice and lite lots of power left at end of day

Exactly what I have, both work awesome

Took the pistol bit out this am. Didn’t have much time, just a quickie to scratch the itch.

3 holes through about 12-14 inches. Maybe 20 seconds per hole. I think it weighs less than the drill and battery.

I’ll say this much.
Clam plate, K-Drill or Pistol bit. Beats the heck out of 30 pound gas auger, or $1,000 Ion.
