What a memory that is. We lived in Port Stanley for a while. BIG nets of smelt pulled in on the beach, bonfires, laughs - great times.
Saw this recently posted on another site. Titled don't eat the smelt. Something to consider now when in the past it certainly wouldn't have been.

Not sure I'd worry about smelt. Maybe the bigger fish. Mercury is a cumulative poison.

It's crazy what you don't know about the fish that you can purchase in your local grocery store. They have a surveilance program with consumption guidelines for angled fish, but it doesn't look like anything commercial gets tested. I used to work at a college where we would do methyl mercury testing of fish flesh in the lab. Out of interest we decided to test readily available fish from the local Loblaws store. The consumption threshold for Hg consumption is 0.5ppm. Any result higher than this would result in a zero consumption advisory if it was in the Guide To Eating Ontario Sportfish. We tested four different brands of canned tuna, fresh tuna steak, swordfish steak, and black-tipped shark fillet. The tuna steak, shark and swordfish were 1.5-4X above the guidelines! If I remember correctly, one of the four tuna brands was toxic (above 0.5ppm) and another was borderline. Needless to say, I'll never eat shark, swordfish, or tuna steak ! Makes me often wonder when you see walleye fillets in the store that obviously were from 7-9 lb fish, or Huron whitefish that must be loaded in contaminants.
Little fellas are pretty thick here at the moment. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...155389e5b2.jpg
