Who has removed hot bluing off a gun part. What’s the best method you found.
I’ve used commercial bluing remover and “naval jelly”. I found the best way is to polish it off with fine emery cloth.
hot bluing as in like on a barrel ?
asking because i noticed my dads rifled barrel has some bluish to it, never really knew what thats from,
i picked up that Remington cleaning kit with the 3 types of spray and that cleans my gun very well, takes off the browish on my steel from the rain with 1 wipe i havent tried it or noticed it work on the blue so i wouldn't be able to comment.
Scary as it sounds.... vinegar. Plain white vinegar will turn the magnetite in the bluing to a thin layer of rust in only a few minutes, wipe off the rust and bare steel (mostly) is left. I don't know if it will work on aluminum though.
Disclaimer: if someone F's up their firearm, it's not on me.
Once the bluing is gone you have raw steel open to the elements.

If I get my nerve up I’ll let you know how it goes.
And yes videos on YouTube looks like white vinegar does it simply
Thanks for posting this! I have an old muzzleloader I kit-built about 1988. I did the barrel in cold blue and now I want to remove the blueing and brown it.
I'll definitely try vinegar.
I want to strip a cylinder. To polish metal.
