So we have a farmer buddy with a load of muskrats that are doing a number on his drainage system. My dad is a trapper and wants to solve his problem, however the muskrat trapping season ends at April 30th. Is there a process in which a trapper can trap muskrats that are causing damage per say out of season under some sort of "Nuissance" permit? How would one get one?
Your dad would be an agent to the landowner for the protection of property so he is likely good to go.
I am just dealing with this issue and beavers. I would be safe and reach out to your local MNRF and they would either issue you a permit or just tell him to go ahead and trap them.
From the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act:
Protection of property
31 (1) If a person believes on reasonable grounds that wildlife is damaging or is about to damage the person’s property, the person may, on the person’s land,
(a) harass the wildlife for the purpose of deterring it from damaging the person’s property; or
(b) capture or kill the wildlife. 1997, c. 41, s. 31 (1).
Agents
(2) The person may use an agent to harass, capture or kill the wildlife under subsection (1) if the agent has the authorization of the Minister or belongs to a class of agents prescribed by the regulations. 1997, c. 41, s. 31 (2).

Thanks!!! We just scouted his properties today. He has to have thousands of muskrats, it's crazy. My dad ordered a couple dozen more 120 conibears to help with that.Quote:
