Surprise in my Venison Steak

My daughter and I went on our annual Dads and Daughters camping trip a few days ago in Bon Echo on Joeperry Lake. Two friends of mine and their daughters usually come as well, this time there were just 4 of us. In between rain showers on our second night I did up some venison loin chops in the fire pit and they turned out amazing, aside from the little surprise I got in one of mine...

Looks to be about half of a 180 grain Winchester power point from my brother's 30-06. That's a first for me. Glad it was in my steak and not in any of theirs. The funny thing was we butchered this deer ourselves, and the bullet in the loin was unnoticeable when we butchered it. It was encased in a bit of gristle that it pulled through from elsewhere I think.

A buddy of mine once got a piece of a Power Belt in a moose roast, but aside from that I don't think it happens often. Shot is common but bullet fragments aren't...

For camping, I usually take a piece of frozen loin in a ziploc, let it thaw until the second day, slice it up, dump some Italian salad dressing in the bag for a couple of hours, then throw it on a grate over a bed of charcoal in the fire pit and enjoy!

It turned out to be great time overall, and aside from a few showers the weather was decent.

Pulled a bullet out of a moose roast one time. It looked fully healed and it was a rump roast.


If I had to guess it was a 45.70 shot lol

Had a farmer show me a 30cal bullet he found on the magnet in his corn silo this spring. Not sure if he was assuming it was mine or not, But in a .270 area one could only wonder how far or high that bullet came from to land in his field lol

When I serve game birds to guests I always warn them in advance that the birds were shot and the possibility they may find pellets in the meat. Then I watch them chew very carefully. :D

Nothing illegal with target shooting in most of those "270" areas, the restriction is for small game hunting only.

The folks we were camping with used to be anti-hunters, borderline PETA members. It's taken a few years but they're almost fully converted to reason now. They fish and eat their catch now, they're ok with hunting but don't do it themselves and they'll eat venison when I bring it along. That's why I was glad the fragment was in my piece. I probably didn't have to worry, they cleaned their plates and went back for more.

I have a buddy who no longer hunts but is given and helps out with geese a lot. He has a metal detector for goose breasts, you would be amazed how many pellets end up in the breast without taking down the bird and fully heal over.

He snapped a tooth at work eating goose sausage from his friend, made it past the metal detector, and through the grinder without notice.

I broke a chunk off my tooth my very 1st Turkey....:)

Went to Lee Valley and bought a metal detector. Designed to use on wood for nails but works great for scanning over the meat to find lead.

A must have !!!
