hello everyone,
im very curious if you guys have a set way of preparing and skinning a deer to bring to get mounted? ive seen diagrams of a couple different ways now, but that just adds to the confusion LOL
reason im asking is im set on getting my first deer mounted no matter doe or buck, hopefully this is the year.
any information is greatly appreciated like always.
As far as I can tell the more hide you give the taxidermist the better off you are. (just behind the shoulder should be enough)... Lots of good Youtube vids out there..... With it being the off season, there is lots of time to watch videos and get a good idea of how to get it done....
Now if you find it to be too much, you can always do a euro mount, a lot easier and takes up a lot less space.
Personally a good size picture of the game (trophy) hanging on my wall, is the way to go. Dusting off a picture is a lot easier than dusting off the mount :)
Each there own myself there isn’t a buck out there that I’d have mounted certainly wouldn’t spend the coin on a doe.
Euro mounts cost pennies if you do them your self
Simplest is to get yourself a taxidermist ahead of time.Ask him if he wants the hide raw or salted.
This is to assure you can take the head to a known taxidermist ,prepped the way he wants, shortly after skinning is done.
Do not field dress the deer in a way ,to cut the belly side way up.Do not cut higher up then the armpits.More work to finish gutting,and You will need to reach up for the windpipe........
Then you skin the deer as you would-only cut the hide "under the armpit" all around body.Longer the hide the better for the taxidermist.You do not need to go down to the "belly button"though.
Cut straight line up(under the front legs)straight to the "knee"(which is actually the elbow of a deer).Cut off the rest of the leg and toss.
Roll the hide "up"towards the head, while skinning, This is one reason many prefer hanging deer heads down.When at the base of the skull-break the spine ,cut the tendons,and hand the hide with the head attached and intact,to the taxidermist. Same day-or next day ,after the skinning.Warm weather -need to keep it in a fridge or salted...........
If bothered with the "tube"rolling,you can cut at the back of the head,all along the spine,up to the base of the skull.Seems easier to skin that way ,but i am not convinced in that.Then proceed as above.
Many instructions teach skinning/prepping as You would cape the deer also.
IF you are not caping the deer yourself(would not recommend at this stage)you are done.... fast and easy.

i would at least like to get my first deer mounted, after that ill probably only do some euro mounts unless one day i take a monster down.
my dad has said he always regretted not mounting his first deer, id love to cherish the moment and have something to remember it by, i dont mind spending the coin as long as its done right.

Wildlife Artistry and Advanced Taxidermy are in Orangeville and Caledon.
Had WA do a wood duck for me and Advanced has done a bear rug and few whitetail shoulder mounts.
Recommend both for mounts. You will be looking at 8 months to 1.5 years for mount to be completed.
Advanced is rated one of the best in the world, They do anything and everything. Pricy, But again, Quality work.
