Last year was very productive in the grouse woods, hope for the same this year
I won't be hunting grouse again this year due to very low numbers in my area of northern 75, southern 60 WMUs. I'm pretty sure it's West Nile, as there's lots of excellent habitat .There hasn't been what I'd call a huntable population of birds now for at least the past 8 years, and counting. You can walk good habitat, with a dog, for hours and you're lucky if you find one brood group of birds. My 150 acres used to produce 7 to 10 broods per year back in the early nineties. Not a single brood last year (and that's confirmed by my Lab). There's one this year but the hen only has two chicks. Pretty much nothing in the other areas I've covered during walks with my dog. LPD and pox in the turkeys, and now WNV in the grouse. Pretty sad to see the game numbers so low. I wonder if you'll see another bag limit drop for grouse in the southern WMUs when the MNR clues in that the birds are in trouble.
do you think habitat has changed?

Taking more time off this year to chase them in the wilds of Northern Ontario.
