Bear hunt so far: Wolves

So far a very unsuccessful season so far. Went to WMU 41 and 49 and zero hits after 3 weeks. Only 2 hits on 1/4 baits in 55A where this story starts.

A couple days ago we were about to head down the tree from an unsuccessful hunt. We hear a wolf howl sound off probably 1km away NE. Then one sounds off much closer behind us about 200 yards away E. Then 5 more sound off directly infront of us, and they're coming up wind towards us. 3 of them come within 20 yards right infront of us and don't go away until we make some loud noises and flash spotlights ​around. Figures since I am close to the algonquin border which is full of wolves. I also saw one cross the road earlier further south that same day.

I have their howls recorded but I am unsure of how to share a video here. I could send it to you if you PM me your contact info. At the very least I can provide a picture of a fisher that visited us that same day.

Seeing that he is in 55 he may be in an area that does not allow hunting of wolves and coyotes.

Also, why the blanket statement, wolves have been part of the natural ecosystem here long before man, they do kill and eat deer and moose but so do you.

Just polluted with them at our camp in 49 too. Wolf,coyotes,mutts whatever ya wanna call em, Need thinning bad.

I see the US has realized that in a lot of their parks and are opening hunting seasons to cull them back.

I watched an interesting documentry about re-introduction of wolves to yellowstone, and how it changed the screwed up ecosystem.

These articles are so biased.

Like does noone understand how nature works yet?

Wolves were eradicated from the park in the 1930s...So the elk population takes off way above sustainable population. They eat all the vegetation until species become at risk. Then it trickles down until the beavers are loosing feed and their population crashes.

70-80 years later they reintroduce wolves back (now bigger Canadian wolves) and talk about how they are changing the ecosystem for the good.


Sure, Wolves should be there to control the ecosystem. But then wolves start to leave the park and ranchers start to shoot them when they see them as they are a threat to their herd.

All these people just look at how good the wolves have done and they want to ban hunting of them...

THEN the wolf population gets out of control and the elk/sheep/deer population crashes. Bears and other predator population start to crash and it trickles down again. Then they are forced to uplift the ban again as the ecosystem is way out of wack again.

Why can't we just leave nature the way it is, Instead of banning this and that.

Talk to any ranch owner around Yellowstone. They will shoot each and every wolf they see, Forever.

Notice the number of people on here who want wild boar to show up, even if it destroys the livelihood of the farmers who give them permission to hunt now. It is amazing how little conservation many hunters consider.

In 55A they allow hunting of Wolves and coyotes from Sept 15th to March 31st. I still have a wolf tag from February (I take one with me when winter camping incase I need it because we have dogs with us).

Regardless, the wolf population there seems aggressive and out of hand. I do not hunt deer there but the only animal I'm seeing there are wolves and they seem to have little fear of people. There are also several sheep and cattle farmers further south.
