WMU 1C hunting issues
So a family member just arrived in WMU 1c for the moose hunt and was told he couldn't hunt up there because they are putting in hydro lines and was apparently turned around. Anyone who's hunted the area via drive in hunt knows its only one road so you are kinda screwed. Anyone else planning on going to 1C and have heard anything about this or know where the work is taking place, he was at farmer lake. I am headed up in a week and would like to know whats going on before I waste my time and money driving that far just to be turned around. We have called the local OPP and MNR to see if they have any info but nobody was available to answer the phone.

Did you contact Hydro? Maybe they could confirm or give you better directions.

It’s not a “HydroOne” line. If the area is closed to hunting, then there should be signage and approved by the Sioux Lookout MNR.
The 2 people to contact:
Laura Johnson | Fish & Wildlife Technical Specialist | 807-738-2361 | [email protected]
Shawn Burke | District Resource Operations Supervisor | 807-738-0387 | [email protected]
Sioux Lookout is in the Central time zone so you have to account for that when calling. Of the 2 people, due to COVID, only Shawn will be in the office, but both are contactable via email.

I got ahold of the Sioux lookout mnr, he explained they can only stop you from hunting the power lines and where they are working. I assume my cousin must have been planning to camp/hunt directly where they were working. I guess I'll find out soon enough, headed up in 6 days.

Sounds that way, they cannot turn you around on crown land. With that said, I've always wanted to do that hunt up there but I was always told (by locals) the outfitters pay the Province for "leasing rights." A lot of the access roads are gated off and apparently if you enter without permission you will be charged blah blah blah. Its insane the amount of land up there and people try to micro manage access points, its ridiculous. But hopefully your family members can setup and hunt around the lines. Where we go they just put new towers in and they clear cut every area we hunted for the last 20 years. Its nice to see it no so overgrown lol, but the works said NOTHING to us while we hunted. They actually were telling us where they see moose/bear/wolves etc.
Also, maybe the hydro company owns a bluff on both sides ? Thats possible too, Ontario crown atlas is a great source to use to find that information.
Happy the MNR said they can't deny access thats good to hear.
