Beginning next week, visitors to The Ottawa Hospital will be required to show proof that they are fully vaccinated to enter.
Ontario began requiring people entering restaurants, bars, gyms and other indoor locations to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination this week, but hospitals are not part of that vaccine certificate program.
In a statement, The Ottawa Hospital said hospitals in the region support the plan to require proof of vaccination to access businesses and will begin requiring it for visitors in the coming weeks.
“COVID-19 vaccination is effective at reducing the risk of serious illness, hospitalization and death, and therefore protects our health-care system from becoming overwhelmed.”
Proof of vaccination will be required at The Ottawa Hospital’s campuses beginning Sept. 27. Other hospitals in the region have yet to announce when their requirements will kick in.
All hospitals in Ottawa previously announced that they would make vaccination mandatory for staff — going beyond the province’s requirement that staff simply reveal their vaccination status and undergo testing and education if not vaccinated.
Hospitals continue to treat patients who are not fully vaccinated.
