In most cases getting it as a preventive measure also cost $$$. Was $350 when I got it in early 2000s to do work in sketchy parts of rural Africa.

Rabies is around us, if you are a trapper or exterminator you should spend that money on your shot but the rarity of rabies in animals that are in contact with people is very small. That being said, I have been told that if you have had any exposure to bats you should get the shot.
There was a Canadian who died of rabies a few years back, got it in the Caribbean while working there and died back in Canada, still rare.
