"44 cal" Euroarms Kentuckian

Well, finally had a chance to get out and shoot this guy. The thing is marked "44 cal" but it is a 45, not sure why they were stamped 44 but definitely a 45. The twist rate on this gun is 1 in 35in, or there abouts, essentially 1 revolution for the entire 35in barrel length. The rifling grooves are shallow, that and the twist rate makes me believe this is a conical gun rather than a round ball gun, and the shooting today proved that.

50gr of FFFg and a 250gr Maxi Ball lubed with Bore Butter and it had 2 shots touching at 25 yards, well that is a good start. Moved out to 50 yards, not as good a grouping but they are fixed iron sights and not easy to pickup the dot, but the bullets went through the board behind the target true, not key holing at all. Took 1 shot at 100 yards to see what this would do to the side of an empty propane tank, hit dead center but did not penetrate.

Will be playing with the powder granulation and amount to see what I can get as an ideal load but this thing is very promising.

Flinter or Percussion?

I have heard the same as you that 48" and greater is for round balls and less is for minnies etc. but I will quickly defer to the references that seem to know much more.

I have a 50 cal round ball gun, they have really deep rifling and a 1 in 66in twist, not sure what the twist rate is for the round ball and 45 cal but it would be close to this and would have the same deep rifling. The rifling here is shallow, seems like this gun is made for conicals and it does work.

Ya, crazy that there are 45 cal round balls that are smaller than the 44 cal round balls, but that must be due to these weird designations in some european made rifles.
