2021 reflection and success (hunting)
2021, what a strange and awesome year it has been this year. Last year I started off doing a few road trips in the northern wmus to hunt sharp-tailed grouse during the winter but with minimal success... However because of a large irruption of ptarmigan that year (mostly documented in Quebec with some here in Ontario), I ran into a pair and harvest them both in March. Didnt get the sharptail but got something even better. Fast forward to fall. Waterfowl opener I managed to get a wigeon drake in eclipse (ive harvested many wigeon before even a beautiful drake last season) despite the increasing heavy pressure in my area, had some success. When grouse opened, I connected on a brown banded/ruff ruffed grouse which is like 1 out of 20 grouse. Also got a chestnut phased female spruce grouse in October. Come October it was a very mild and strange waterfowl hunting since this year we got alot of mild weather and west winds without much north wind or cold snaps so we ended up getting a huge number of coots come into our area which I limited out on and salvaged a very slow day of waterfowl where we havent seen anything all day. November after getting my long-tail duck decoys, I decided to test em out with my diver spread and had 2 hens come in after a long slow morning (reoccuring thing this season) and decoyed perfectly and were both dropped. After 2 years of pandemic and cancelled trips I finally whent out made the drive out to Lake St Clair for a guided hunt and was not disappointed. The first day for divers while slow, I managed to get a male Ruddy Duck and a hen Canvasback (she was tasty). Christmas time after spending time with family, I managed to adventure north again search of sharp-tailed grouse and they were in thick! Flushed a flock of 10 and had one not fly so i was quick on trigger and let my shot ring true. Ive wanted to get a sharptail for years on end and finally got him!
