Simcoe Walleye
Has anyone ever targeted Lake Simcoe Walleyes, either through the ice or during the open water season. Years a go before they shut down the Talbot river to anglers we use to slay some huge fish up the river prior to them spawning on there way up to Gamebridge. Even out front where the river flows into the lake we use to take a few, but mainly fished the open water in the river. Biggest fish landed by a buddy of mine was just over 16 lbs.
Back then I only heard of one guy that would fish for them during the summer months and did quite well, but he mainly fished at night. And over the years here I've never heard of anyone posting anything about Lake Simcoe Walleye. Just curious.

Even on the dedicated Lake Simcoe forum don't hear much about walleye. The odd lunker through the ice but usually an incidental catch. Could also be the ones in the know are keeping it quite. Same could be said for crappie.

I’ve been fishing Simcoe for over 40 yrs and have never caught a walleye. You would honk that fishing with jigs for bass or perch there would be at least one incidental catch over the years but nope, I never have.

Same with Couchiching , just stories of the odd one being caught. Never a picture for some reason LOL

Well if you want to see what they look like head on up to the locks at Gamebridge, they should be running anytime now. If you go in the evening bring a flashlight and shine down in the water, you'll see what I'm talking about....
Just wondering if the same technique the guys are using on Erie would work here on Simcoe...

We had a funny experience with walleye.
so teaching my GF about fishing and fish, I kept talking about walleyes ... of course we all do.
we even did a multi day trip up north with the friends, and didnt catch too many ... 2-3 eating size between 3 of us I think, so kept telling her its not easy to catch them, they are not everywhere and so on ..
so fast forward to last year, first time my gf holds a rod on ice, and boom, 10 mins in she catches a walleye on simcoe lolol
it was my one and only walleye there on simcoe, small guy, we released him after snapping a pic.
now I can no longer use walleye fishing excuse to get out of town with the boys lol

We used to fish at the other end near Holland Landing and would target pike and wallye.
my dad also caught one just over 16lbs but that was over 40 years ago

I've caught a couple at the mouth of the Talbot through the ice but for the amount of time I've spent out there I'd say they are few and far between

I'll bet there're some guys out there who do catch them but keep it to themselves!

Kind of hard to target them in simcoe if they don't even have an open season for them. I figure they have a small home range and there aren't very many of them. I see people catching them in the winter.
