I was just a kid during WW11but I remember what went on - a lot of things were rationed - the things that affected us the most was the rationing of sugar, butter, gas, meat - the one thing that was common in my neighborhood was the small banners that people had in their windows - each banner had stars on them noting how many from that house was in the military - if it was a gold star then someone got killed in the military - my mother and father both immigrated from Germany in the mid 20s - during the war I was always fighting with kids that were calling me names because I was from German family - the one thing that helped was there were quite few German families in the area - a coal mining town in northeastern Pennsylvania - I had an uncle who was in the German army and was killed on the Russian front - I had two other uncles that immigrated when my parents did and were killed in mine accidents - there are so many people around who don't have any idea how things were during that war -
Interesting Joe, I always love hearing stories about people's experiences of the war
I sure know how the war affected my family. My Dad was overseas for 6 years with the Hastings Prince Edward Regiment. 600 went overseas to Italy in 1939 and 250 came home. My Dad came home a shadow of himself never to recover. I won't go into details , but it wasn't nice.
