I would say they hang out in dense bush (cedars, etc.) areas where the bush blocks the wind and a swampy area where the water helps to temper the bitter cold. When done 'for the long term', this is loosely referred to as "yarding". A decent food source can become scarce and unfortunately deer can be reluctant to relocate which can lead to severe winter kill.

Cold is easy for the deer-have accessible ,and enough food for them,and they are just fine.
Their hair is hollow, helps insulate for warmth, and also helps for swimming
