I was looking into getting a few dipsy divers and the forums have a vast number of opinions regarding which line to use and what size? So i guess what I am looking for is what is everyone using for line and dipsy size? From what I have read I was thinking of 30lb braid and then #1 Dipsys. I am targeting walleye and generally the top 30 fow.
I found 30Lb braid main line to the dipsey then followed by a 20' leader of fluro of your choice is ok for walleye but the 30lb braid gets tangled easily. If you have experienced rod handlers on the boat you will be OK. For newbies I suggest using 20-30lb mono main line to the dipsey followed by a 20' leader. My personal choice is 60lb braid to the dipsy then use different leaders depending on your species, that will cover salmon and walleyes.
If you are mainly looking for eyes in 30 fow or less, check out the tadpoles. That’s all I use, with inline planer boards. There’s some good YouTube vids on how to use them. I use 15 lb mono, as braid slips through the clips on the boards.
I had my level wind reels spooled with 30 lb braid. The smaller diameter of the braid helps to get the Dipsy deeper with less line compared to mono. Also, when wanting to trip the Dipsy for retrieval, the stretch of mono makes it harder to do. Do use a snubber attached to the rear of the Dipsy to absorb shock of a hard strike. As well, I have rods that are made specifically for the pull of the Dipsy. I believe they are 9½ feet long. The larger divers put a lot of pull on rods.
