Some people should not own a dog

We went for visit yesterday at our future son-in-law's home.

His neighbors have a 4 month old beautiful pure bread male yellow lab that has the potential to be a great family/hunting dog.

Apparently they think its ok to leave him tied up behind there garage for the entire day while they are at work. I didn't see a water or food bowl either... :(

Me being me politely reminded them that this isn't good for the dog for obvious reasons. They didn't like it but I had to say something. I asked what there plan was for training and apparently they think a dog can learn to behave and be obedient on there own with no formal training. In my few minutes with the dog he was jumping on everyone and generally acting up. All that pent up energy has to go somewhere. Truly a sad situation that I am sure is all too common in our society.

They even admitted they were not ready for a dog but bought him anyway. He was too expensive to give him away so they will be keeping him.

I did put it out there that I am willing to help train him for free on my own time. I want him to have a chance and not be re-homed or end up in the dog pound when he is older and out of control.

A very sad situation that I had a hard time walking away from... :(

Good on you for offering the help, they may change their minds later and accept your offer.

Good for you for what you've tried to do, but you may have to be tougher than you'd like to be. Tied up all day, no water? Not sure I could walk away on that one.

A dog that is tied up outside all day without water enters the realm of animal neglect. A call to the relevant Humane Society would not be entirely out of order.

Growing up I remember lots of dogs living most of their life on a rope or chain, they always had the necessities but I always wondered, what's the point of having an animal? Why bother if you are too lazy to spend your free time training and enjoying your dog? Obviously, people have to leave their pets at some point but I hate to see a good dog treated like a lawn ornament.

I thought it was now illegal to leave a dog tied up all day outside. Some dogs can be trained to stay in the yard. My neighbour's dogs stay outside for hours at a time no leash at all and they NEVER leave the yard

There is nothing wrong with leaving a dog outside if it is in an large enough enclosed pen with shelter from the elements and as long as it has fresh water and food but leaving it outside tied up with no food or water is wrong, me personally would be making a call

That is so sad, especially for a yellow lab (I have one so it holds a special place in my heart). I would definitely say that is illegal and morally wrong. Bad enough not to give basic training to a dog so it at least behaves, but to have a lab pup that would just absorb all training like a spung, again I'm partial to labs.

Seen that scenario too many times... young couple figures a dog is a "must have" if they are to be a family and go out and get one but worst still is they won't change their lifestyle because of the dog and they most likely never owned a dog before either. Probably nice people otherwise but YES there are people out there that should not own dogs(pets) and God help us there's some that shouldn't be parents either. I would keep an eye on him and make the call if they don't smarten up.

On the long weekend their was a older couple out on the road searching for their dogs
They came out to the boonies let’s their dogs out for a run two German shepards as soon as they let them out they ran away get this they had them hooked together with 10’ of 1/4 “ cable.

Don’t know if they ever found them or if their wrapped around a tree someplace.
