Lake Mattagami
I booked an overnight stay at Green Wilderness Lodge to try my luck at catching some walleye. It was a father son trip. We got lucky that they had a cancellation so I jumped on it. I like to adventure around Ontario and try different areas for various species. I was always impressed with James Smedleys fishing adventures so I’ve been keen on doing my own.
My son and I arrived at the lodge around 1pm. We quickly unloaded our gear into the cabin after getting acquainted with the owners. We then jumped in our rental boat (14’ with electric start Yamaha 15hp). We were given a map of the lake and a general lay of the land. We spent 4 hours hopping around various structure (weed beds, rock piles, drop offs, etc). Our only luck was a hammer handle pike in a weed patch.
We headed back for dinner. My son was anxious to get back to fishing, so we quickly bbq’d some hotdogs and headed out for the evening bite. It was 6:30pm and we had marked a few nice drop offs from our earlier excursion to try. It turned out to be fruitful and we boated a few nice walleye (biggest being 25”). We easily managed a dozen or more walleye and a few pike in a couple hours. It was a good evening for fishing with a gusty wind churning up the lake.
The next morning was more of the same. We managed another dozen walleye and 6 small pike. For trying a new lake, I give this place thumbs up and worth another look. We pulled back into the lodge by 11 and docked the boat. We spoke with a few other guests that were there and apparently the prior week was tough fishing due to the mayfly hatch. I guess we got lucky.
All fish were caught while either jigging or working cranks. Chartreuse colour patterns worked most productively.
