Waterfowler Heritage Day.

Look like the CWS cancel Waterfowler Heritage Day in Canada. :ashamed:

[COLOR=#333333]Under the MBR, youth or minors (under the age of 18) could hunt migratory game birds under their mentor�s MGBH permit during Waterfowler Heritage Days, which generally occurred from one to seven days before or during the regular hunting seasons, depending on the province, but did not occur in any of the Canadian territories. If minors wished to hunt outside of Waterfowler Heritage Days, they had to purchase a MGBH permit. The MBR 2022 allow minors to obtain both the MGBH permit and habitat conservation stamp free of charge. This provides youth in the provinces and territories with the opportunity to practise their skills with a mentor throughout the full open seasons, as well as the special conservation harvest periods, and provides them with their own bag and possession limits. Holders of the Youth MGBH permit will be required to hunt with a mentor, and a mentor can accompany up to two youths, as was the case with Waterfowler Heritage Days. Two changes were made to the MBR with regards to mentors. The first is that a mentor must have held a MGBH permit at least once in a previous year, and the second is that the mentor will be able to hunt when out with the youth they are mentoring. Permits for youth will only be available for purchase online. In order to avoid confusion, and for regulatory consistency, Waterfowler Heritage Days has been repealed in the MBR 2022./HTML]

Heard about this in the Long Point forum, terrible news, as this initiative was always great at promoting mentorship to new waterfowlers

giving up 1 day for a full year seems a good trade. When I started there was no youth day. You had to earn way to hunt, for me it was at the age of 14 sitting on a muskrat mound with the dog on the edge of the marsh while dad and the group pounded away at the ducks. Waiting for the call to release the dog to pick up the birds. Got my license the following year and joined them in the marsh.

The full year is great for sure, however I do wish that they kept the weekend before the season opened for the kids. I saw the following benefits:

1) Youth didnt have to compete with the veteran waterfowlers at local public blinds
2) The weekend was solely focused on developing the next generation of hunters; and
3) The weekend was always great for 1st generation hunters, for example, Hullett and Long Point Waterfowlers would organize volunteers to go out with kids that showed an interest and didn't have anyone to take them out or learn from

Although Waterfowler Heritage Day may be no longer, I still hope fish and game clubs and conservation areas continue to organize similar events to get youth out in the outdoors, especially if they don't have anyone in their family that can mentor them

those are truely great reasons why however the cynic in me would like to know the number of youths who actually become hunters. Having a great day sets up the youngster for failure as we all know not every day is a game filled day. Those that learn from the start getting out is the biggest part of being a hunter will stick with it. Those that just want to shoot should start at the range.

Confusing ? Sounds like they (CWS) is taking away something but yet giving something away in return ... ?

My son got his hunting license just after last years heritage day and I got him out a couple times but I was looking forward to this years heritage day. I'm disappointed that I won't be able to take him out ahead of the full season before all the pressure starts around Ottawa.
