Sharon, there are no phez in ON, you know that :)
WC opened on the 25th though. I only made it to a local park and the dogs had a double point on two separate birds, that was nice.
Once I can find the time off work, the fun will start :)
The only tale I can tell is how long ago I actually saw a pheasant anywhere in Ontario. Back when I came over here in 1976 you could see them in many fields north of Highway 7 especially across the old GTA. Now between development and coyotes they are none existent.
I remember them being breed up in the Nonquon public land and Scugog Island with the MNR helping out, I guess most of those programmes stopped long ago.
LOL Yes I knew that. It's called old age. I thought it was 1976. :)
Is Hullett still putting out pheasant?
I can't recall seeing a wild pheasant in Ontario in years. Any pheasant "hunting" I've done has been either at private hunting clubs such as Griffith or Nicholson Island or at area commercial operations.
Grouse season also opened on the 25th in my usual WMUs. No tales to tell about that so far. I generally wait for the leaves to thin out before going after them.
there still some in the marshes around, see them once and a while on the road while driving through. Certainly not any you can hunt and I wouldn't even if I know where they were...
I made it up to Hullett, it was a bit rainy but still a good number of hunters around. I put two in the bag and the dog had a great run.
Ihunt Hullett releases pheasants during the open season. A dog definitely improves your chances of getting any pheasants but it’s not impossible without one. If I was trying to hunt pheasant without a dog I would try and concentrate on smaller patches of cover and walk in a zigzag pattern stopping frequently. This makes the birds nervous and hopefully flush.
