Lets take my longbow vs my crossbow into account.
My longbow shoots a 600gr arrow at about 160fps. It takes about 0.5 seconds to reach the target at 20 meters with about 44ftlbs. That would be considered an ethical shot normally taken.
My crossbow shoots a 500gr bolt at 420fps and in the same time it can reach a 70 meter target with almost FOUR TIMES the energy. Yet that's an unethical shot?
They both reach the target the same time. Except one has WAY more energy and the deer is too far away to be concerned by the sound. The 70 meter shot with the crossbow is way more ethical than the 20 meter shot with the longbow.
Not even mentioning several hunting celebrities like Tim Wells, Cam Hanes, and Joe Rogan are applauded for taking FURTHER shots with much slower bows.
What's more important than distance is the environment (wind, lighting, and obstructions) and the animal's behaviour. Off my experience past 40 yards the deer does not even react to the sound of a bow.
I see the appeal to stretching it out kinda like 2 footitis in boats. saying that hunting with archery equipment has done the opposite for me. I want them in close, I've learnt more bowhunting than gun hunting by several times over.
I shoot 30-50 arrows a day 5 days a week 12 months a year in my yard from 20-60 yards and shoot at least once a week out to 100 yards in the property behind me. I'd say I'm probably better than average out to 80 yards and still have absolutely zero desire to shoot an animal past 40
I would agree. My personal limit is about 40 yards. All our stands are setup for good bow shots, so there's really no need to shoot further than that. On top of that, it's big woods hunting and the longest shot anyone could really get is probably 80 yards at best.Quote:
