My scope is marked on the top side in FPS for matching up reticle hash marks and on the bottom side for magnification(2-7x) As you increase the speed dial you are increasing the magnification to adjust the hash marks to match the speed of your crossbow. I shoot a matrix 380 and the dial is set between 3 and 4 on the mag ring/speed dial. Thats where it stays for the hash marks below the crosshair to be accurate. If I was shooting a 450-500 FPS crossbow then the mag ring would be in the 6-7x range. This would likely decrease light transmission a bit, but is it noticeable who knows, as with any rifle scope when you are hunting at last light it will gather more light at 3x than at 9x.
