Bye, Bye, Olympic- level competitive shooting in Canada

A recent article grabbed my attention, " Gun ban will silence Olympic-level competitive shooting in Canada, advocates fear." With the gun ban it will block those with an interest in competitive shooting from obtaining firearms. Things are truly becoming ridiculous through new legislation that will make little difference to the level of public safety. Guns will continue to enter the country and they seemingly have no way of preventing that from happening. As they do find their way in, they will end up in the hands of those who have little or no firearm training and will may eventually arrive in schools, playgrounds and other public location. Why isn't the public being educate enough so they can learn how to live with firearms, rather than continually being fed attempts to suppress them ? They are not going to go away, and all attempts at suppressing them are making things worst. While many more legitimate gun distributors close their doors, it is broadening the opportunities in the market place for the illegal gun trade. Is our government to blind to see what they are doing, or they hoping to open the door to the American gun culture in this country. The key is to educate the public about firearms rather than attempting to suppression through the use of firearm bans.

We stopped educating the public about firearms around 1993 when the Prime Minister Jean Chretien was elected (I hope I have not offended any one by saying his name ;)), Up until then they still taught Hunter safety in some schools in NB and they still did archery and some schools still and 22 practice. Sometime after then Liberals started telling people that firearms were evil.

I still remember when I was a kid pretty much every house hold had at least one firearm, usually either 22 or a shotgun and this was in a residential area not rural.

My Mom use to take her 22 to school in the 1950's and go rabbit hunting at lunch this was in grade six they had to put their guns in the corner of the room, I use to take my 22 or shotgun to high school (kept in my trunk) and go hunting after school, imagine if you went to school with a gun in your car today, I bet the swat team would be there shortly (actually schools will call the Police if you have a pocket knife and you will be banned from that school).

Anyways to depressing to think about what has happened with hunting over the past 30 years.

Right ! When the firearm became evil those who owned and used them became evil and were not to be trusted. You could no longer be counted as a law abiding citizen if you owned a firearm. You posed a threat to society, and because you own a gun, you viewed as a potential murder. The criminals had hoards of company. With this Canada became a divide nation. So how will Humpty Dumpy be put back together again?

Welcome to the new normal that's what I keep hearing anyway.

I agree we should be more open ,more turkey shoots more public involvement in shooting and understanding the basics along with safe handling.

Re: GW’s Momma bringing a gun to school. I went to Sir Sandford Fleming College for F+W back in 84-87. We’d go out for the morning duck shoot, then rush to make classes for 8am. You’d be running down the halls in your camo, carrying your shotgun in a case. It was totally ok to do so as long as it was encased. We’d put our guns in our school locker ! Now they can’t even have an archery club or range on campus. I also remember you could smoke darts in the halls and cafeteria. There would be ashtrays in the halls outside of the classrooms.

Yeh I was in a consignment store just yesterday here in the GTA and there were a few books for sale, one of them was a Sears Catalogue from
1976, which happens to be the year I got here.

I pretty well knew there would be rifles in there for sale so flipped through the book and about half way in there was about 6 pages of rifles and shotguns for sale. My Remington 30.06 semi with a Scope included was about $156.00 .

Maybe we need the big retail players to normalise things again.

These acts by the Liberal government weaken us as a nation, human nature has not changed, conflict will continue as it always has.

You make a good point, I had written some more history on the quotes but thought it got too wordy and distracted from the point I was trying to make, which was the Canadian Governments low support for National defence, both at the federal level and the civilian level.

I think with the war in Ukraine this particular Canadian Government has woken up, along with the rest of the World. Very happy to see yesterday that Roshel here in Mississauga will be making two Armoured Personnel Carriers for Ukraine per day and that will be getting ramped up pretty quickly.
