A dark day for Canadian democracy ?

So….let’s have a discussion about the findings of the Commission about the use of the Emergencies Act.

my thoughts remain that the use of this Act was completely unjustified and irresponsibly used to silence governments’ critics. After all that we have heard through the inquiry and the media, I feel it’s really disappointing that a supposedly independent inquiry would find this. More than ever it seems like government is not on the side of people.

I agree and for the life of me, can't find it again, I read something earlier who was involved in the findings and who ruled that the Emergency Act was ok. The names were listed and relations to trudo just couldn't be denied by any stretch. Talk about a loaded outcome.

Why would anyone be surprised that a Liberal appointed Judge would agree the EA was justified even after reams of testimony was heard from many astute and learned people that it clearly wasn't? Gee,who woulda thunk that?

I’m going to agree with the report. The act was required to be used by the feds to put an end to the illegal occupation of Ottawa and elsewhere. If the local police and provincial police could have dispersed the protestors and put an end to the occupation there would have been no need for it. To me it looked like chief Sloly did not live up to his oath of protecting the residents of Ottawa and Doug Ford did next to nothing to help out.
The protestors did themselves no favours with their illegal acts. They made their point in the first week, if they moved on this would have never occurred. They acted like vigilantes and got what they deserved. Just my opinion.

IMHO, if the protesters stated their case in the streets of Ottawa and then went home at the end of the day, this would not have even been a blip in the media. Protests are not remembered a week later as they are an everyday occurrence in many capital cities. People, whether you think it is right or wrong, do not give a crap about any causes unless they are inconvenienced. This is the big reason strikers set up informational picket lines to get their message out to the public, instead of maybe just writing a note on Twitter and hoping for anything more then lip service from the general public that would otherwise go about their daily business unaffected by others plight.
I read a good sig line on someones' avatar that has always stuck with me.
There are 4 boxes to a democracy:
1 soap box
2 ballot box
3 jury box
4 ammo box
The government, I believe unlawfully but that is just my opinion and what a few million other citizens think, jumped #2 and went right to #3. We need to go back to step #2 and right a wrong.

I saw people exercising their right to peaceful protest, and yes it was an inconvenience to the people of Ottawa. Freedom has costs.

Let’s not forget about the major national news story that went away as soon as Covid broke….remember the native protests that occupied the railways and threatened to put a big dent in the economy ? Remember Trudeau vigorously defending THEIR RIGHT to protest ??

Totally agree with your entire post and so do the majority of law abiding citizens in Canada.

This was far beyond any peaceful protest I ever policed and I have been to hundreds.

It was not mean to be a peaceful protest.

For those complaining about the EVENTUAL treatment of the occupiers of Ottawa,Windsor, Coates, lets have a little comparison on what what happened in Toronto when Mr Harper decided to have his G7 summit.

Hundreds of PEACEFUL PROTETERS kettled and arrested and abused by the police on the first day of the summit.

We did not hear a single complaint from THE RIGHT about this abuse by the authorities.

We did learn a few things, Premier Ford was a coward as he did not wish to reign in his own support base.
Police Services are nowadays inept and run by paper pushers who have never been street cops.

We know that the right in this country have followed the lead from the USA in this occupation and that is a bad thing.

The best outcome of course will be felt in the next general election, Mr Poilievre who has STRANGLEY been very, very quiet on this matter will be paying a big price for his support of the occupiers.

Who could possibly trust this guy to be a PM when he walked and supported this mob.

Thanks Pierre for giving Justin all the Ottawa votes, votes from law abiding citizens in Windsor, parts of Alberta.

Canadians are a pretty forgiving lot but you van bet your bottom dollar this occupation and end result will be top and centre in the next election cycle, with all the opposition piling onto PP.

So I suppose when the radical LEFT decide to stage the same nonsense, close down borders, descend upon Calgary some 10,000 strong from Toronto and Ottawa, take the POLICING resources from all across the Country and leave folks with no protection, you will be OK with this.

Not to mention ten's of millions of dollars wasted for the policing and in trade.

They will stay in Calgary for seven weeks in close down that entire City and dis turbe the lives of its citizens.

THE PARTY OF LAW AND ORDER INDEED?

This occupation was designed to try and embarrass the Prime Minister instead it cost the average Canadian much loss in trade and tourism and reputation.

If anybody think's for a New York minute that Justine Trudeau has lost political support from his normal supporters your dead wrong and I will bet he has gained support from moderate's in this country just on this issue.
