Trout opener
Friends and I had an elaborate plan for getting together for trout opener but Mother Nature had other ideas. The morning called for 30mm of rain, and while my younger self would have jumped out of bed at 4 am, this more mature version decided to hold off. The afternoon showed more promise in the forecast with 1-3mm so my brother and I packed our gear and headed out for some speckled trout. It was a light pitter patter once we arrived to the first river, but the water was high and fast. I tossed out panther martins while my brother fly fished with streamers. No luck after 30 minutes so we changed locations. Our next spot is usually a guaranteed limit so we went in with great confidence. Upon arrival there was a couple of guys fishing the area, and while we casted a couple times in the skinny portions of the river, the main pool was occupied so we left it for them. By 3pm we arrived at our 3rd spot. A few guys were fishing the one main pool, but a few other pools were vacant. It took a few minutes to adjust my spinners’ retrieve in the fast water, but once I got it to where the fish were the action was fast and fun. The fly of the day for those interested was “white death”. We managed to catch around 30 speckled trout in a few hours. It turned out to be a great afternoon.
