Joe was the lead scientist on the recent study looking at the question of whether the Ontario spring black bear hunt reduced or increased human bear conflict. Joe discusses how the study was conducted and what its major findings were. Topics discussed include the spring bear pilot hunt, changes in bear populations, changes in human-bear conflict, baiting, age and sex of bears taken by hunters, possible explanations of the human-bear conflict phenomena, limitations of the study findings and whether the research will bring about changes to the spring bear hunt.
