Theft while camping

So over the years I have heard many stories of hunters and campers getting their stuff stolen while their away from their camp.

Since I camp on Crown I am probably more exposed to theft.

If we leave in the trucks and there and we leave the ATV's behind we usually chain them together. however bolt cutters would easily make short work of the chain. We generally hid as much equipment in the tent kinda out of site out of mind. If we take off on the ATV's for the day we look stuff in the truck, but they could always smash a window or jack the truck and take the tires.

Were suppose to head up North next week and I think I will take my trail cams just to help keep a eye on things.

Has anyone ever had their equipment stolen while camping?

For the most part I think camping gear is cheap enough most people aren't going to bother stealing it. I'm usually most concerned about guns or fishing gear. When we leave our ATVs at the hunt camp where it's pretty remote we usually drive them straight into the bush so they are completely hidden. When camping I usually hide anything more valuable in the truck, out of sight and locked.

I feel like stashing things in the bushes or out of sight in general is probably the easiest and most effective since there's no real way to stop a determined thief.

In all the years we hunted and camped on Crown land,we never left anything of value in plain sight and never had anything taken.

I suppose you could get a could of those tracking devices for the costly items.

If someone really wants to steal something they will regardless of what you do. All you can do is try to prevent theft and be mindful and don't leave valuable stuff in plain sight.

I've got an airtag on my dog's collar. I've got another one hidden on my kubota tractor.
They will report the location to you if someone with an iphone or ipad gets within about 40 feet of it.
You can see the location on your iphone/ipad using the Find My app.
The airtag battery is supposed to last for about a year and is easy to replace.

I've looked into the miTrail GPS devices - they are not very reliable - go offline for extended periods at random, and the battery powered one - the battery last for a week if the device is not moving. Put it on something moving and it reports it's location every minute and the battery lasts about 16 hours.

Apparently to make the tags more stealthy one needs to remove the speaker on the tag.

I think only the phone linked to the airtag can make it beep.
