I purchased a new rifle scope for my .308, and I'm wondering if there's any tips or tricks to properly do it? I have the rings, and would like to do it myself. My fear is not lining up the reticle straight. Any help would be appreciated

Do you have a small workbench with clamps like this? https://www.homedepot.ca/product/hus...nch/1000839490 Locate the table on level ground like a basement or garage floor. You can place the rifle with padding between the plastic jaws, not too tight. Mount the rings and scope, then have a sheet of paper with the vertical/horizontal cross on it on a wall that you can line it up with. Rotate the scope until the reticle lines up, tighten the rings a bit at a time to the specified torque.
Put a bubble level cross-wise across the lower rings after they have been properly torqued down when anchoring the rifle in the vise to make sure it is levelled side to side, then you can proceed as Fisherman says.
I have the second one in the list back when I bought mine it was 10 bucks.

I also try to find a nice square corner of a house window way out in the distance to line up my vertical and horizontal. The father the object you are trying to line up with the more accurate it will be....
I have mounted many scopes in my days. Here is what works for me.
Tools.
Wheeler level level kit.
Inch pound torque wrench. I use the one made by vortex.
Gun vise or lead sled.
Make sure the gun is safe and unloaded. :)
Loosely Install the lower ring halves and screws.
Put the scope in the lower rings.
Loosely install the upper rings and screws so the scope doesn't fall on the ground.
Check your scope eye relief to ensure it will work for you by moving the scope back and forth until you have a clear picture looking through the scope.
Level the action first. This can be done if you have a flat surface on the action.
Put the level on the top elevation turret and move the scope until its level without moving the gun.
Once this is done the scope is level with the action.
Torque the scope rail screws to 30-inch pounds.
Set the torque wrench to 18-inch pounds and start to tighten the ring screws in a random pattern like you would when installing a tire on a car.
If the scope goes out of level back the screws out and adjust as needed.
Ensure the ring halves gap is the same. This will eliminate ugly scope ring marks.
That just about covers it...

Without being there I would say the top one goes onto the weapon.
