Farthest kill shot on a Bull

With archery season knocking on the door me and my buddies are talking about farthest we would shoot a bull with our set ups,
Curious what everyone with experience has done? Yardage and your set up with what happened
I know my bow is accurate enough to hit where I'm aiming at 70 yards just seems far cause anything can happen in that stretch plus the big issue penetration,
Bull I shot last year was 51 yards double lunged with a mechanical G5 dead meet broad head, went maybe 15 yards and was dead in less then 25 seconds.
Bull I shot was with a 500 grain arrow at 400 fps out of my crossbow,

Long shots could be seen as being unethical. From my own experience having lost a deer or two, 40 yards is the max I would take a shot, there are too many factors that come into play.

For sure but again moose and deer aren't even comparable when bow hunting. Deer jump the string a Moose hears the string and stands there, and a moose has 5 times the size for a kill zone.
Ive never lost a animal with a bow and would shoot a bull out to 60 with out any hesitation with my crossbow and 50 with my compound, a deer 45-50 be my max on a perfect day. But again unless you archery hunt moose and have shot one no need to really comment about deer hunting it is a different animal.

That's an arrogant response to a valid point. A thread about bragging about who's made the longest bow kill? No thanks.

Not bragging just saying what I would shoot with my set up, trying to learn what people set up is, bow, poundage, arrow weight, how far it penetrated and what the results were at yardages.
Sorry I dont care how many deer someone has lost when I want to talk to moose hunters about moose hunting.
defiantly not bragging about hitting something the size of a truck door at 50 yards,

I know some very experienced bow moose hunters who would not hesitate to take 50 yd shot at a standing moose with no crap between the shooter and moose. IMO, 50 yd is a chip shot with your setup…..

You have a good set up, it sounds to me like you are hunting within your comfort of safety. I hunt with a guy who wont take a shot over 30 yards, and another who is a better shot than me. My point to just create a side conversation of ethics that should accompany the topic of maximimum range, its the oppoiste side of the same coin so to speak.

In that regard, practicing in the field at various distances (after sighting in at a range) in order to be better at range esimation is the number one thing that helped me. To estimate range in the tree stand I measured out my paces to get 10 yards before hand then when in the tree mentally pace out 10 steps to another tree, then 10 from that tree to another tree and so on. I find it difficult to guesstimate where 30 to 40 yards is without using this method. My bow shoots flat to 27 yards then drops a few inches (about 2-3) about every 10 yards after that, by aiming a few inches higher for each 10 yards I can get POI in the target zone to 40 yards. Before using this method I shot at a deer that I thought was at 35 yrds but later turned out to be 45 yrds, luckily the arrow went below the animal ( I was using a slower bow back than) and it walked away unharmed. This was becuase it was a big bodied deer with a small(ish) rack and it appeared closer than it was.

You have to decide what is an ethical distance.

If it doesn't work out then you have answered your own ? the hard way.

I personally wouldn't think twice about 60 yards under decent conditions, but I practice to 80 yards daily in my backyard
saying that other than in Alberta I've never had the opportunity at a moose over 40 yards even during the gun hunt. I haven't hunted areas where moose have walked through clearcuts or around lakes all Ontario moose has been done in pretty heavy bush

I was thinking same 60 yards be my maxs this year, we shoot 90 to 100 yards for practice and its not a matter of us at that range its just will the arrow do the job, last years bull was 51 with complete penetration so at 60 it will defiantly do the job.
