It's not everyday that you convince your father-in-law that a backcountry hunting and fishing trip is in order. I have been lucky as we have now completed our second annual trip. The destination remains the same and somehow the passion never wanes. Join us for some questionable Canadian Thanksgiving weather as we pursue North America's beloved game bird the Spruce Grouse and that ever elusive feeling of freedom.

looks like a great time, I'd pass on the spruce never liked them much, ruffled better IMO. but better spruce than nothing. too bad season closed for the laker.

Them looked like ruffs to me, you sure they were spruce?

That camp fire sure looked inviting, laid back and just enjoying the heat and solitude... Brought back some fond memories over the years doing exactually what you were experiencing...

I second that.

Those are Ruffed Grouse. Spruce Grouse meat is dark livery colour like duck

I'm no expert in grouse identification by any means. Thankfully the season is open for both when we hunt. If anyone wants to share some tips on identification I would be all ears.

Ruffed Grouse have a short peak to the head that Spruce Grouse lack.
Ruffed Grouse are lighter-colored overall than Spruce Grouse and appear thinner-necked.

By these two criteria they may have been ruffed grouse.
