Shotgun modifications

With the conclusion of the December controlled hunt, I'd like like to add a saddle mount (for a red dot) and sling mounts to my Remington 870 Wingmaster 12G.

I've been looking at the Weaver No Gunsmith Shotgun Saddle Mount and the only option I can seem to find for a sling mount set (magazine cap and mount to be tapped/screwed into the stock) is no-name made in China package from Amazon.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations.

Remington 870. I'm happy with the one I have for Winchester.

For what it’s worth, I went the saddle mount route and found accuracy suffered a lot. I went with a cantilevered barrel and it’s been much better in terms of accuracy.

I put a saddle mount on my sx3 as the metal was to thin to tap and mount fixed. I put it on about 4 years ago and have never taken it off works great.

I agree with this. If you are keeping the gun as a dedicated slug gun, then a saddle mount is o.k. But if you plan to remove the saddle mount to use the gun with bead sights or whatever, you will spend a lot on slugs to re-sight it in when you put the saddle mount back on. After getting a cantilevered barrel, my saddle mount is collecting dust.

What's a swing mount by the way, and what is it used for?

Doesn't Uncle Mike's make the kind on sling mount you are looking for? I have one, but I got it a long time ago - I'm pretty sure it is an Uncle Mike's

Be VERY careful when you buy a saddle mount for your 870. I had a near-death experience with my 870 where I could have easily shot someone if I had not been careful of my muzzle control. I bought a Leopold brand saddle mount for my 870. The mounting screws replaced the factory two punch pins that are on the receiver. On the Leopold mount, the mount screws are threaded and you tighten them with an allen key. This puts pressure on the gun's trigger assembly and negates your safety. The gun will accidently fire as soon as you close the action if the screws are too tight. With the safety on, my gun would automatically fire as soon as you cycled a shell to close the action. I immediately contacted Leopold and told them about the defective mount. I got the standard "PFO" letter back from them! Couldn't believe it! Hopefully nobody has died yet due to their product.

All this crap about saddle mounts, slug shotguns, trying to find slugs, cantilevered barrels, etc. goes away if you buy a muzzleloader. A cheap $400 Thompson Center Omega will shoot MOA groups at 100yds, every time. One shot = one dead deer every time. I ditched the shotgun over 30 years ago and would never go back.

We hunt through deer drives, I haven't shot a muzzleloader before, but assume a follow-up shot on a running deer would be difficult if I went that route
