Questions about using stainless steel line
I decided to change my quite old lead core line and I just learned that stainless steel seems to be a better choice than lead core or copper.
Then it turned out that Monel is an even better choice but cost almost twice as much.
I would like to ask a couple questions regarding using steel wires.
Firstly, I couldn’t even find the depth chart for Monel wire, so I don’t even know exactly how better it is compared to the Weighted Steel wire. I really doubt that the density of Monel is more than 10% of the Weighted Steel, so I’m not sure if I should pay twice the price for that.
Second, I don’t understand if there is any reason/advantage of using monofilament stainless wire over braided ones. There are way cheaper options to buy braided stainless steel wire than the brand names mono stainless lines. I have heard that some folks use thick braided lines for stainless steel cable replacement on their downriggers to reduce drugging. So, why not do the opposite: use, let’s say, about 0.8 mm diameter stainless steel cable instead of mono stainless steel fishing line?
And last the question: if I’m going to use stainless steel mono wire, can I attach it to the regular (Dacron) braided line? If so, what is the best knot for that?
I did some research on this but could not find any satisfactory answers.
Thanks!
