Hi Folks. Last winter I was ice fishing just outside of Elliot Lake. A skim of tiny black pepper like thing appeared in the hole and then started onto the ice. On closer inspection I realized they were actually moving (alive)!!!
Does anyone know what they are?

I’m guessing some sort of bug larvae.
Probably snow fleas. They will appear on top of snow when it is warm and quite wet.

Springtails (Order Collembola). Snow fleas are a common name. They have a furcula (coiled tail) that propels them. Google it to see.
Thanks for your thoughts everyone. I have seen snow fleas before on the snow but these things actually came up through the water column. I agree with Tom Gobble that they are more likely a bug larvae.
