Simcoe ice report at Beaverton
A report for anyone wanting to get out for perch off Beaverton. There is about 6 inches of good ice 1.5km offshore of Beaverton now, just south of a line between Georgina and Thorah Islands. Operators have huts out between Beaverton and Port Bolster. I cannot comment on the conditions out on the lake trout and whitefish grounds further out. The big Bombardiers are still not out on the lake. Lots of people walking out with portable huts. Leave the snowmobile at home unless you want to burn the sliders off it. No snow cover, just bare ice. ATV is the way to go. Travel is excellent. I didn't have chains on mine and it was good going. I kept it at 25kph, standing up to see ahead. Some small 4" pressure cracks and the odd area of broken ice slabs. You're fine if you go slow and keep an eye out. I would not suggest parking your truck on the ice yet unless you want it on the bottom of the lake. Action was hot in 22-30 fow. Non-stop perch all day 8am till about 230pm. Must have caught at least 80. A mix of dinks and some nice female piggies up to 13", about 1.3lbs. Went home with 19 that gave me almost 3lbs of skinless fillets. I forgot how good a perch fry tasted! CO's are out. Make sure you have your helmet, atv insurance and plate, fishing licence, no booze, and receipts for your bait! Remember it's not legal to party fish!
