So with spring in the air (ya i know its snowing right now) sure there are pups out there ready to learn the ropes. With out getting into the discussion of wild birds make a bird dog and so forth thought a discussion on options for those without the ideal options to get the dog ready for fall. Saw this vid and figured had some good ideas.

Keep in mind when using "carded" pigeons that you need a big field or risk a pigeon getting tangled high up in a tree. The fella in the video was a using a big card, which is not a bad idea with trees around. His methods were inspired by the West-Gibbons style (https://projectupland.com/hunting-do...th-mo-lindley/), except that sleeping the pigeons is generally not recommended. A lively, skittish bird is a cornerstone of West-Gibbons. There are some great, concise and easy-to-read PDFs on the West-Gibbons method that can be found at https://www.facebook.com/groups/steadywithstyle. Its pretty amazing how fast a young dog steadies up using this method. Its the birds that do the training; the handler is pretty much just there to hold the check cord ;)

Ahhhh, the white pigeon, he is like Mr. Miyagi; he has trained many a dog. Here he is schooling my Leia when she was a pup :D
