I recently purchased a new rifle scope and rings. How do I mount the scope, and get the crosshairs straight? I bought a scope level, and it still seems to be off. Any advice would help

After mounting the rings,tight the screws holding it to the gun..
Place the scope,make it "square to the gun"-see above. post.
Rough adjust distance for eye relief.Magnification to be at the max for it( i do 1 magnification less then max)Tight the srcews holding it to the scope rings-firm,but not completely tight.Just so much loose-you can slowly ,with min effort rotate the scope and loose enough to move it back and forth.
Raise the gun ,shoulder it as you will in the future,and look thru the scope .Make sure you WILL HOLD the gun ALLWAYS this way.Head ALLWAYS on the same spot on the stock.Try it several times -shouldering and looking thru.
Assure your eye relief is good.Adjust scope LOCATION if eye relief is not perfect.Mark it on the scope-at the scope ring, with pencil.You will ALLWAYS have good eye relief then , thru this process.
Drop magnification to almost min.
Then,looking at something square(as mentioned above)re-verify if you are still square.
It can happen that the stock shape and or your body CANTS the gun just a little.Thus it will make the crosshair "look canted"eventhough is "perfectly square".
Adjust.You will shoulder the gun-that matters,not the bench.
After satisfied,tight the top screws of the scope ring.In zig -zag( figure 8)pattern.Always about the same amount,always same pattern.
Until "very" tight , finger feeling tight,but DO NOT over tight.

All good advice above, another U-tuber I like is GunBlue490, he has a video specifically on mounting scopes.
Of all the problems with scopes that I have had the reason was traced to hinged caps on the scope mount. I switched to the 'tactical' style with screws on each side of the cap and my problems went away. This was on rifles and also crossbows.
