Caledon gun hunting

To all firearm and gun hunting enthusiasts the town of Caledon is proposing an amendment to stop all gun hunting, sport shooting and gun clubs in the town of Caledon. This is a direct attack on us all. The meeting is at 2:30 on May 7 how convenient to have it at a time know one could attend because most people are at work. I encourage all of us to email the contact in the link and change the time so people can attend and show up to the meeting. This one is going to be tough slogging. Caledon is heavily built up with urban sprawl not a lot different than most small municipalities within larger Regions of southern Ontario.

True but there is a lot of Rule country in Caledon. Unfortunately this proposal effects all areas not just within city limits

True for the areas below the escarpment (think Bolton, Caledon East and areas just north of Brampton). Above the escarpment though (roughly half the land area in question) still pretty rural but mostly rich ex-urbanites living on pretend/hobby farms or smaller acreages. Funny how it is split. South side of HWY 9 in Caledon has rules up the ying yang. North side of #9 in Dufferin we don't even have any calibre restrictions and no bylaws regarding firearms. Totally legal to shoot coyote with my 308 from inside my living room - which happens from time to time. TG - i will try to make it and will email.

I remember in 1973 (just a kid then LOL) when Peel County was dissolved and replaced with the Regional Municipality of Peel. The Townships got dissolved and everything become either Mississauga, Brampton or Caledon. We had a chicken farm (20,000 laying hens) in Chinguacousy Township. The north half of our township along with Albion Township got added to the existing Caledon Township to become the "Town of Caledon." South half of our township got added to Brampton along with Toronto Gore Township. It's the areas of southern Albion and Chinguacousy that got added to the old Caledon that are the problem and where almost all of the sprawl are occurring.

Good morning councilor Groves,


I am a concerned citizen and I have many friends and family in Caledon, who have and continue to support you over the years. They own and use farm and rural property in Caledon and are very concerned about the upcoming firearms by-law amendment. The farming and rural community has a long history of safe and ethical hunting and firearms use. We are the proud and strongest advocates of safety, respect and conservation of wildlife. We share this great land and space with everyone, we are vibrant and strong and contribute in many ways to a balanced and healthy community, we are inclusive and respecting of all. We hope to be treated equally and the same.

Our concern is that there is no reason that one should not be able to use there own property safely and reasonably with out disturbing others including using a firearm to shoot or hunt. There are noise by laws if excessive noise is a concern and have not heard of any concerns personally or in the community.

Please consider and advocate for all peoples interests and rights in this and all matters and support reasonable by laws not ones that are not inclusive, abusive or unreasonable. We can find ways to work together and find common grounds rather than ignoring and cancelling each other out. Lets continue to be a strong community that shares each others interests and values and continue to grow and learn together to be better and tolerant.

I have not heard of any safety or nuisance concerns regarding this matter ever. Hunters and shooters are trained and experienced in using firearms safely and teach others the same.

Some important positive points to share;

• I don't think we have a shooting range in the area but they exist many communities, in every province, in every country. They are built to high standards and rules. They are the safest place to recreate and can contribute to the local economy and fuel related businesses if done properly.

• hunting is a close range sport and is not unsafe. Most game like ducks, deer and turkey are shot at less than 40 yards (steps) and only take one shot to be fired limiting any disturbance and safety issues.

• hunting is a regulated and controlled sport with very strict safety and ethical standards like open game seasons, bag limits, restrictions, times etc. contrary to what people think you can not walk around and shoot at anything all day every day.
• firearm owners are the most concerned about safety and are champions of wildlife conservation and wellness
• firearm owners are licensed and regulated federally requiring a background check and license renewals every 5 years.
• there are strict safe storage and transportation rules regarding ammunition and firearms
• hunting and shooting is a strong economic factor in every rural and farming community
• hunting and shooting is family friendly and shares generational roots and connections
• our indigenous people who we respect and honor hold hunting and shooting very high as it is and always was a way of life for them and all people including settlers from all cultures and exists around the world. It is nothing new or to be scared or ashamed of and nothing to remove from modern culture and society. There is a place for all of us.
• hunting is a fun and healthy way of eating and enjoying the outdoors. It supports a healthy and natural lifestyle that society is craving. Many hunters or shooters enjoy and share the outdoors in many ways sharing the landscape harvesting, farming, hiking, foresting, camping etc. Hunting or shooting is only one dynamic of the outdoors we all share together

There are many more positive things, I can go on for a while. Like all things we do not understand there is truth and facts we must know to make wise and informed decisions. lets not destroy and do away with things we do not understand but learn and embrace all that we do not know yet.

There is no reasonable reason to support anything that would not allow anyone to continue hunting or shooting safely and reasonably with out causing a disturbance.

I received emails from the councillors indicating the meeting has been canceled until further notice. I was also told that they really don’t have any info regarding this by-law and until they get more briefing about this by-law there will be no meeting as of now. Goes to show you there is know real data about this by-law and someone was trying to slip it in an agenda to change something and thought people wouldn’t notice.

Good to hear its been withdrawn........for now.

Yes according to the OFHA they are rethinking it over until further notice
