If you use a sliding knot then leave the tag ends long instead of trimming them short. They will flow through the line guides better.
That waggler style float in the picture is the most versatile float there is but wouldn't be my Steelhead go to. You want a top and bottom float for that. The way to combat wind with an avon style float on slack water is to backshot it with a B.B. a foot above the float then sink your rod tip and bury your line a few cranks to get it out of the surface tow
