Bicycle lanes -or path to endless spendingg(and road to insanity)

They are building bicycle roads in Guelph left-right and center.
Taking away roads from cars-yet nearly no one is using them new lanes.
Not "their money"for sure...........

They preach ENVIRONMENT,yet they put MORE asphalt down,for no one to see benefit from them(OK-few,here and there)but at WHAT COST?
Double lanes ,nicely painted up ,like Highways.

The biggest idiocy is -now they put TRAFFIC LIGHTS on the bicycle lanes(heavy traffic intersections).For the bicyclist to STOP or GO.
Two bicycle lanes on ONE side-TWO separate lights.

Since the SAME walkway/asphalt is used by pedestrians-now we have 3 (TREE)lights at the SAME PLACE.
One for the pedestrians -and TWO for the two lanes of cyclists.

I am blown out from the water with this.........like is ANYONE thinking here????

I remember working for a company who got the contract to drive sheets to widen the Port Perry Causeway, I was excited to see they were expanding in until I realized they spent all that money to expand it for bicycle lanes. 25 years ago I went to Europe (Holland) where they have these bicycle "roads" where a huge part of the population rode bikes and scooters from home to work, maybe 10km ride I would estimate. I can't understand how anybody thinks that a society here can mimic what they have over there. In my career I've averaged 150km/day commute to make the money that it takes to thrive in southern Ontario.

I just drove through that area. I never saw one bike in a bike lane.
It is crazy.

Canada is not bike friendly, not like Europe. Winters, cheap(er) gas, and long commutes do not lend well to cycling. A small bike lane wide enough for one bike is all that is required, Burlington has a few but they seem to be expanding the width and adding signs to the bike lanes like you describe.

As a cyclist I beleive it is a mistake to make big wide bike lanes at the cost of 99% of the road users (cars) which would result in increased congestion and fuel consumption. The answer to increasing bicycle use is to provide cost incentives for employers to provide change areas for cyclists at their places of employment.

Same as electric vehicle charging stations, cost incentives to employers to build charging statiuons will increase charging locations for people who do not have the option to charge at home (ie apartments).

There are quite a few bike lanes in Barrie and the only wheels they have ever seen are those of a snow plow or garbage truck, biggest waste of money spent on roads.

And there are MORE and MORE Bicycle lane Traffic light intersections popping up in Guelph.
By now-i lost count of them.

Two lights each sidewalk, each direction ,and they are the same - side by side .
I just can not believe this mindless spending.

And the municipalities just keep pandering to appease the few. When I grew up, you learned to respect traffic otherwise you had to deal with father if he caught wind you were being a richard on the road.

New bike lanes going in on hwy48 some are calling it a death trap . I also know a few cyclists that said heck no when I said they were almost done lol.
Our kids school has concerns that the new lanes will encourage some to ride their bikes.

Been multiple accidents involving big rigs through the construction process so far.
