Giving back what we take: Hunting and the environment
To all hunters:
If you are at the stage where you wish to justify your harvest and return more to the environment than you take.
I have some free tree seeds for your consideration, these are pick up or local delivery if you are close to Burlington:
Schuette's Oak Acorn seeds: This is a heavy producer White oak cross between a Swamp and Burr, a native tree that was cut down extensively for its wood qualities by boat builders back in the day. It will tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, and is hardy enough up to the Huntsville area or even further North if you are in a warm pocket. This tree is suitable for wet conditions and will tolerate spring flooding. Almost all animals eat this variety including deer, bear, and some ducks, the seeds have very little tannin and unlike Red oak seeds which can last into the winter the White acorn seeds get eaten very quickly attracting Deer durring hunting season.
Dunstan Chestnut seeds: I have a very limited supply of these hybrid seeds, historically native to Ontario up to the Burlington area the American Chestnut was almost wiped out due to an imported Blight fungus in 1904 which attacks the tree trunk. The Dunstan is a cross-bred tree between the American and Chinese chestnuts trees for its blight resistance and height of the historic American. These seeds will only be distributed to those who have the right soil conditions as this tree needs well drained loamy soil and are not very cold hardy. During deer feeding tests Chestnut seeds were the food to be first selected over whole corn and Acorns, this is the preferred food source for QDMA property owners.
