Moose rut start When ... When is this warm ..?
Vague post but the moose rut in Ontario is over. They rut mid Sept to early/mid October.
The rut is roughly the same time every year independent of weather. The weather just determines the intensity of their movement.
The rut happens irregardless of the weather because the timing of the birth is very important. Too soon and the calves risk freezing or catching pneumonia. Too late and the calves won’t be big or strong enough to get through winter.
During warm weather, moose move slower or during the cooler parts of the day and stick closer to water so they don’t get too warm.
During the summer, bulls patrol their home ranges and know where the cows are. So when the rut comes, they know where to find the cows.
I started moose hunting with a bow when the 1st 13 townships were opened in Ontario for archery moose. l kept records of our moose hunts and found that the area we hunted the best results for the rut was Sept 20 to 24. I would record when we got answers to our calls, sightings coming to call or sightings going to hunt location, where we saw the moose, wallows, scraped, rubs. We got answers before and after those dates but every year that was our best result time.
