What would you do? Pheasant Scenario.

I am probably overthinking things but here is a scenario and would appreciate a bit of education.

I was in Pelee this morning and hunting a hedgerow running North-South.

The sun was coming up from the East warming and lighting up the East side of the hedgerow.

The wind was also running East-West.

So two options.

Cover the east side of the hedgerow where I thought the birds might be coming out to get warm but the dogs would be upwind of them so essentially bumping into them.

Or cover the West side which was shaded and cooler but the dogs would be downwind.

Is there a right decision?

If its a cold day I'd walk in the sun if its warm walk in the shade-for my comfort. The dog will be working (or should be working) back and forth in the hedge row so wind direction really will not be a factor.

The only issue I see is being blinded by the rising sun and trying to shoot . It has happened twice to me this year on woodcock.

only twice? its my main excuse for a miss, that and a tree got in the way ;)

Great question. Been there myself. I find that hunting the wrong (upwind) side can be very productive sometimes. And it teaches the dog that a bird can unexpectedly be anywhere, even within inches.
