A Real Bummer

The grandson shot at a buck and knows he hit it - we go down to the edge of the pond where the deer was - a lot of blood in one spot - close to a cup of blood - see a blood trail leaving the spot and start to follow - at this point there are 4 of us looking and trying to follow the blood trail - we see one spot where there is some blood with issue - it starts getting dark but we try for an hour - the blood trail becomes spotty and it is hard to follow - so we decide to come back Sunday morning to continue to look - 2 try to find the blood trail and 2 keep looking around the woods - after about 5 hours we give up - can't find anymore blood - can't say that we didn't try to find the deer - figure what happened was it was a single lung shot which finally stopped bleeding but the deer still had one good lung and kept going - the grandson was using a 243 which I think is marginal for deer - next year I'll let him use one of the lever action .35 Remington I have - we did manage to keep 4 doe so far - got another week of rifle season then archery after Christmas - stay safe guys - Joe

Good work getting the kids out hunting.

The .243 will do just fine.

It's all about proper shot placement.

I have lost a few deer over the years to. It happens and hope it doesn't rattle and discourage him too much.

Should have tried a tracking dog. Not sure of your area but there seems to be a lot around. I know there is one in Ontario and it is volunteer, maybe help pay for gas. But don't let the young lad fret to much, it happens to everyone. I know of 2 already this year and they both have my number and know I would bring my dog to find it even the next day. I'd think a 243 is enough of gun as well. Like a bow have to keep in mind the angle of the shot.

If use a 243 on the biggest whitetail there is out to 300y.

Regardless of the lost buck good to hear you are still kicking and out in the woods. How old are you now? 90? Merry Xmas from a 60 something pagan who can grudgingly respect your tenacity as an old white Christian Yankee.

yep - I'm 91 now - can't see as good as I did - can't hear as good as I did - can't get around as good as I did - but still going - can't complain - I have a couple sons and now 2 grandsons who are into hunting - had a lot of action last Saturday - the one grandson dropped two doe and the other had a crack at a buck - I'm blessed with a nice large family

91 and still getting out, I hope I can be so fortunate.

By chance can you pass on his #? We hunt in WMU 81, lost a doe this year we kept bumping...after 3hrs of trekking no more blood trail once the doe found a swamp
