Seedlings available in spring

This spiring I will have the following being given out in small quantities as part of my strategy to give back more than I take:

Chestnut: Hybrid American/Chinese seedlings and seeds harvested from Ontario trees, up to zone 5, require well drained sandy loam soil. Will not tolerate wet soil.

The American chestnut was almost wiped out with the introduction of chestnut blight in 1904, it was estimated 25% of the trees in North America were chestnuts. Today it is still the largest ecological disaster, please help repopulate the magnificent chestnut with these hybrid seeds.

Schuette's Oak: seeds and seedlings, heavy producer and tolerant of low land wet conditions with up to 6 weeks submerged, these seeds were harvested from Ontario trees applicable up to zone 4

Shag bark Hickory seeds only, tolerant of wet conditions.

All trees that provide mast/fruit will need some form of protection from foraging animals. Squirrels and raccoons will dig them up and eat the whole thing, deer just graze the tops but this can also kill the tree if its very young. The best protection I have found is to use a commercial tree tube, the second best is wrap the seedling in chicken wire and leave it, it will rust away by the time the tree grows big enough that it would girdle it. Seeds are best planted in high volume, plant them deep enough in the ground that the squirrels cant reach down to dig that far, and put a small section of chicken wire over the seed for added protection.

Tree planting is an exercise in frustration occasionally rewarded with big accomplishments.

HI Marker - We had a horse chestnut that i tried to propagate for years, but the blight would eventually claim them all. I'd be very interested to try a variety that has some resistance, if you still have any available.

I’d love to grab a few Schuette’s Oak seedlings-they’d be perfect for my damp backyard.
